Posnanski: Forget about aggression — the Nationals are trying to win the World Series the old-fashioned way (The Athletic)

Yes, that was more of what everyone expected. The Houston Astros choked the life out of World Series games 3 and 4, beating the Washington Nationals in every way possible. They outpitched the Nationals, outhit them, played better defense and came through more often in the big moments. The games were long and not especially competitive or compelling. The Astros won 4-1 and 8-1, and those games were the simple case of the better team playing better. I’m not sure there’s much more to say beyond that.

Maybe there is something to say about aggression.

As you obviously know, short-series baseball has taken over the game. The baseball so many of us old fogeys grew up with was entirely about the marathon season. Teams didn’t want to win the World Series; they wanted to get to the World Series. For that, they needed four or five dominant, good and crafty starters who could pitch the bulk of the innings, they needed good defenders to cover the middle of the field, and…
