Three quick observations from the Astros’ win over the Nationals in Game 5 of the World Series (The Athletic)

The shock of the World Series reached Astros manager A.J. Hinch on Sunday afternoon when third baseman Alex Bregman entered his office. Bregman had been scanning his phone when an alert popped up. Bregman read the news but needed an authority figure to verify it.

“He came in and asked me if it was true,” Hinch said. “I did a little investigating, and turned out it was.”

The most stunning moment of Game 5 was that Nationals ace Max Scherzer would not be a part of it. He awoke unable to raise his right arm. Felled by spasms in his neck and right trapezius, Scherzer was scratched and replaced by Joe Ross. Scherzer received a cortisone shot. The Nationals held out hope that he could pitch in Game 7. After a 7-1 defeat in Game 5, Washington will need the series to go the distance if they intend to win.
