Bowden: Exploring three potential trade possibilities for Mookie Betts (The Athletic)

The Boston Red Sox have tried to extend the contract of outfielder Mookie Betts since winning the World Series in 2018, but they haven’t gotten any traction. The team is now convinced that no matter what happens, Betts will be testing the free-agent waters next offseason. They now have three choices: 1) Accept the fact that he will become a free agent at season’s end and let him play out his contract and then risk getting only draft-pick compensation for him in 2021  2) Trade him this offseason for a package of players that is probably worth 25 cents on the dollar or 3) Hold him until the next July 31 trade deadline and if they’re not in the race, consider trading him then.

Chaim Bloom, Boston’s new chief baseball officer (and lead decision-maker), has already told teams that he will listen to offers and consider all options for Betts. One of the problems Bloom now faces is that there are only a handful of teams that would even consider trading a significant…
