On Mexico’s monumental victory, Team USA’s stunning defeat and the familiar fear the Americans won’t make the Olympic baseball field (The Athletic)

TOKYO — A bright tangerine cinderblock tunnel runs between the two clubhouses at the Tokyo Dome. It is narrow and ridiculously long. There is no chance a sound from one end could carry to the other.

That was a small mercy for Team USA Sunday afternoon.

The Americans could not hear the brassy mariachi, the thumping banda, the wailing norteña music and whatever else happened to be blasting out of the speakers on the other side. They could not hear the high-pitched shouts and congratulatory applause. They could not hear an overmodulated mixture of sound that no Mexican national baseball team had made before, because never before had Mexican national baseball players celebrated the accomplishment of becoming Olympic athletes.
