Rosenthal: The competition for Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg intensifies as they meet with Yankees, other teams (The Athletic)

The Gerrit Cole sweepstakes are starting to accelerate. The Stephen Strasburg sweepstakes, too.

The two free-agent pitchers, both represented by Scott Boras, will continue to meet with teams in California this week in advance of next week’s winter meetings, according to major-league sources.

The Yankees will sit down with both Cole and Strasburg over the next two days, sources said. Other interested teams already have met with or will meet with the two pitchers, who are widely viewed as the best starters in this year’s free-agent class.

“I feel like I moved to Edmonton,” Boras said, noting he will be inside most of the week during his sitdowns with clients and club officials. “I won’t see the sun until the winter meetings on Sunday.”

The possibility exists that at least one of the pitchers will sign at the meetings in San Diego, Strasburg’s hometown. But the Cole negotiations, in particular, seem likely to extend past the meetings and…
