Rosenthal: Signings and stories that could make for decadent drama at the Winter Meetings (The Athletic)

Greg Amsinger, the MLB Network host who relishes televised drama, celebrates the end of a lively segment by uttering one of his favorite phrases off-camera.

“That was good TV.”

Now, flash back to last year’s Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, when Amsinger said on show after show he could sense a big trade or free-agent signing about to materialize, despite my repeated warnings to the contrary.

The best moves the meetings delivered were the signings of free agents Andrew McCutchen, Charlie Morton and J.A. Happ, and a three-team trade in which Carlos Santana went to the Indians, Edwin Encarnacíon went to the Mariners and Yandy Díaz to the Rays.

It was bad TV.

It also was bad for baseball, which in the past has used the meetings to generate attention and ticket sales during a time of year dominated by other professional sports and college football and basketball.
